Stef Penney is a Scottish author who studied philosophy and theology before turning to fiction and screenwriting. Her debut novel, The Tenderness of Wolves (2006), won the Costa Book of the Year and was translated into 30 languages. Set in the Canadian wilderness of the 1860s, it follows the investigation of a murder in a remote settlement.
Penney has agoraphobia and conducted all the research for her Canadian-set novels from London libraries. Her subsequent books, including The Invisible Ones (2011), Under a Pole Star (2016), The Beasts of Paris (2023), and The Long Water (2024), continue to blend historical settings with literary prose and suspenseful plotting.
