Sophie Gonzales is an Australian author who writes young adult contemporary fiction with a focus on romance, identity, and humor. Her debut, The Law of Inertia (2018), tackled heavier subjects, but she found her signature voice with Only Mostly Devastated (2020), a queer retelling of Grease set in a high school. Perfect on Paper (2021) followed a bisexual teen who gives anonymous love advice through a school locker, and it continued Gonzales’s pattern of mixing romantic comedy with genuine emotional stakes.
If This Gets Out (2021), co-written with Cale Dietrich, follows two members of a boy band who fall for each other while on tour. Never Ever Getting Back Together (2022) puts an ex-boyfriend reality show spin on the genre, and The Perfect Guy Doesn’t Exist (2024) plays with fictional-character-comes-to-life tropes. Her most recent novel, Nobody in Particular (2025), continues her run of standalone YA romances. Gonzales writes with a light touch that does not shy away from real emotions.
