Smith Henderson is an American writer whose fiction is rooted in the landscapes and communities of the American West. His debut novel, Fourth of July Creek (2014), drew strong reviews for its portrayal of a social worker navigating poverty, survivalism, and family dysfunction in 1980s Montana.
Henderson followed up with Make Them Cry in 2020, a thriller set along the US-Mexico border. Before turning to fiction full-time, he worked in advertising. He grew up in Montana, and that background shapes much of his writing.
