Siobhan Dowd was a British-Irish author whose literary career was tragically brief. She published her first novel, A Swift Pure Cry, in 2006 and died of breast cancer the following year at 47. Her completed manuscripts were published after her death, and an idea she left behind became the basis for Patrick Ness’s A Monster Calls.

Beyond her own fiction, Dowd was the editor behind the Dramascripts series, a large educational collection of plays adapted from classic literature for school use. The series includes adaptations of works by Shakespeare, Dickens, Arthur Miller, and many others, totaling over fifty titles. She was also a human rights activist who spent years working with PEN International on behalf of imprisoned writers.
