Simon Van der Velde lives in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and has worked as a barman, laborer, teacher, caterer, and lawyer. He completed a creative writing M.A. with distinction in 2010 and has won or been shortlisted for numerous awards including The Yeovil Literary Prize, The Wasafiri New Writing Prize, and The Harry Bowling Prize.
His novel The Silent Brother (2022) follows Tommy Farrier, who at age five is left alone with his alcoholic mother and violent stepfather after his younger brother is taken by social services. Set in Walker, a working-class area of east Newcastle, the book was shortlisted for the 2023 CWA Gold Dagger award. Van der Velde has also published the short story collection Backstories (2020) and contributed to the anthology Class of Ten (2015).
