Silvia Vasquez-Lavado is a Peruvian mountaineer, tech executive, and survivor of childhood sexual abuse who turned to climbing as a way to confront her trauma. In 2016, she became the first Peruvian woman to reach the top of Mount Everest, and by 2018 she had completed all Seven Summits — the highest peak on each continent — becoming the first openly gay woman to achieve the feat.
Her memoir, In the Shadow of the Mountain (2022), documents her path from alcoholism and repressed trauma to the summit of Everest, including her work bringing survivors of sexual abuse and trafficking to Everest Base Camp. The book won the Edward Stanford Travel Writing Award for Travel Book of the Year in 2023. A film adaptation is in development, with Selena Gomez attached to play Vasquez-Lavado.
