Sheena Kamal was born in Trinidad and moved to Canada at age six. She studied political science at the University of Toronto and spent a decade working in the film and television industry as a screenwriter and actor before turning to fiction. She lives in Vancouver.
Her debut novel, The Lost Ones (published as Eyes Like Mine in the UK), won the 2018 Macavity Award for Best First Novel, the Kobo Emerging Writer Prize, and a Strand Magazine Critics Award. The book introduced Nora Watts, a sharp, deeply flawed protagonist who became the anchor of a three-book series. It All Falls Down and No Going Back continued the story, with the final installment following Nora’s vendetta against a triad enforcer who targets her daughter.
Kamal also wrote Fight Like a Girl, a young adult novel about a teenage Muay Thai kickboxer in Toronto dealing with the death of her father. It was named one of CBC Books’ Best Middle-Grade and Young Adult Books of 2020 and one of Quill & Quire’s Best Books of 2020.
