Seth Godin has been writing about business and marketing since the late 1980s. He studied at Tufts University and earned his MBA from Stanford Business School, then worked as a brand manager at Spinnaker Software. In 1995 he founded Yoyodyne, one of the first internet direct marketing companies, which Yahoo acquired in 1998. That experience led to Permission Marketing (1999), which laid out his argument that marketing works better when customers opt in rather than get interrupted.

His output since then has been prolific, with more than 80 titles spanning practical business guides, marketing philosophy, and books on creativity and leadership. Purple Cow (2003) became his breakout hit, arguing that the only way to stand out is to be remarkable. The Dip (2007) examines when to quit and when to push through. Tribes (2008) makes the case that anyone can lead a movement. Linchpin (2010) challenges readers to become indispensable at work. His more recent books include This Is Marketing (2018), The Practice (2020) on shipping creative work, The Song of Significance (2023) on building meaningful workplaces, and This Is Strategy (2024). Beyond books, he runs a widely read daily blog and founded the altMBA, an online leadership workshop.
