Sarah Prineas is a children’s and young adult fantasy author based in Iowa City, Iowa. She holds a PhD in English literature and previously worked for the University of Iowa honors program before turning to fiction full time. Her adult short stories appeared in fantasy magazines before she sold The Magic Thief and two sequels to HarperCollins in 2008.
The Magic Thief was her breakout book, earning a Publishers Weekly Flying Start nod and a Beehive Award. The series follows Conn, a young pickpocket who survives touching a wizard’s locus stone and becomes an apprentice in the magic-fueled city of Wellmet. She followed it with the Winterling trilogy (2012-2013) about a girl named Fer who crosses between the human and fairy realms, and the Ash & Bramble duology (2015-2016), a YA fairy tale deconstruction where “Story” is a sentient force that traps people into narratives against their will.
Her more recent work includes Dragonfell (2019), a standalone about a boy who discovers his connection to dragons, and the Trouble in the Stars books (2021-2022), her first science fiction series, featuring a shapeshifter who stows away on a starship. She contributed one volume to Scholastic’s multi-author Spirit Animals: Fall of the Beasts series.
