Sara Sheridan is a Scottish writer and activist born in Edinburgh in 1968. She studied at Trinity College, Dublin, and spent time running an art gallery in Ireland before returning to Edinburgh in 1991. Her first novels were contemporary fiction, but she later moved into historical fiction and crime writing.
Her Mirabelle Bevan Mystery series, set in 1950s Britain, follows a former Secret Service worker who turns amateur detective in postwar Brighton. The eight-book series was longlisted for the CWA Dagger in the Library Award in 2022. Her standalone historical novels draw on stories from across the British Empire, including Victorian-era China, the Arabian Peninsula, and the Arctic.
Sheridan is also known for her campaigning work. She was named one of the Saltire Society’s 365 most influential Scottish women, and her non-fiction book Where are the Women? reimagines Scotland’s public monuments as if they commemorated women instead of men. Her 2021 novel The Fair Botanists won the Waterstones Scottish Book of the Year.
