Sara Raasch began writing Snow Like Ashes as a preteen, years before it landed on the New York Times bestseller list in 2015 — which makes her debut feel less like a sudden arrival than the completion of a very long apprenticeship. She grew up in Ohio, graduated from Wright State University, and published her first trilogy with Balzer + Bray/HarperCollins before she was 30. The Snow Like Ashes trilogy established her as a serious voice in YA epic fantasy, with Ice Like Fire debuting at #3 on the New York Times list in 2015.

She has never stayed in one mode for long. After Snow Like Ashes she wrote the pirate-and-magic Stream Raiders duology (These Rebel Waves, These Divided Shores), co-wrote the Greek mythology-infused Set Fire to the Gods with Kristen Simmons, and contributed a reimagining of Sleeping Beauty to Disney’s Queen’s Council series. Most recently she co-wrote the Witch and Hunter duology with Beth Revis — a historical romantasy set during the Medieval German witch trials that became an instant New York Times bestseller with Night of the Witch in 2023. She has also moved into adult and older YA romance in recent years with books including The Nightmare Before Kissmas and The Entanglement of Rival Wizards.

Her work is consistent in what it reaches for even when the setting and genre frame change: female protagonists fighting something larger than themselves, magic systems that carry genuine stakes, and political conflicts where the personal and the structural are impossible to separate.
