The Fall of the Towers Reading Order

Samuel R. Delany is one of the most respected voices in American science fiction. He published his first novel, The Jewels of Aptor, in 1962 at the age of twenty, and went on to produce nine acclaimed science fiction novels before he turned thirty. His 1966 novel Babel-17, which explores the idea that language shapes thought, shared the Nebula Award for Best Novel. Other early works like The Einstein Intersection and Nova cemented his place among the genre’s leading writers.

Delany’s most famous novel is Dhalgren (1975), a dense, experimental work set in a ruined American city. It became one of the bestselling science fiction novels ever published, despite sharply divided critical opinion. His Return to Neveryon series, a four-volume sword-and-sorcery sequence written between 1979 and 1987, used fantasy settings to explore questions about power, language, and sexuality. Alongside his fiction, Delany has produced a large body of literary criticism, memoir, and cultural essays, including The Motion of Light in Water and About Writing.

Throughout his career, Delany has pushed at the boundaries of genre fiction. His work frequently addresses race, sexuality, and class in ways that were unusual for science fiction when he began writing. He has taught creative writing at several universities, and his influence on later generations of speculative fiction writers is widely acknowledged.
