Sally Green is a British author who worked in finance and raised a family before publishing her first novel in her late forties. Half Bad, released in 2014, became an immediate bestseller and was translated into more than forty languages. The book drew attention for its dark tone and second-person narration, unusual choices for a YA debut. Green followed it with Half Wild (2015) and Half Lost (2016) to complete the trilogy, along with companion novellas Half Lies and Half Truths that fill in backstory for supporting characters.
After finishing the Half Bad series, Green shifted to epic fantasy with The Smoke Thieves (2018). That series is set in a fictional world with five POV characters whose storylines gradually converge, and it trades the contemporary English setting of Half Bad for a more traditional secondary world with demons, princes, and political intrigue. The Smoke Thieves ran for three English-language novels, with German translations of some volumes also published. Green’s writing across both series tends toward moral ambiguity, with protagonists who are forced into difficult choices and villains who believe they are acting for good reasons.
