S.L. Huang writes science fiction and fantasy with a strong mathematical and action-oriented flavor. Her first published work was the Cas Russell series (originally self-published as Russell’s Attic), which follows a woman who can use mathematics like a superpower, calculating trajectories and physics in real-time to get out of dangerous situations. Zero Sum Game (2014) launched the series, which later picked up a traditional publishing deal with Tor Books.
The Water Outlaws (2023) marked a different direction, retelling the classic Chinese novel Water Margin (Outlaws of the Marsh) with a feminist perspective. The book won a Locus Award and broadened Huang’s readership. Its sequel, The River Judge (2024), continues the story.
Huang has also published the novella Burning Roses (2020), a fairy tale retelling featuring an older Chinese heroine, and short fiction that has appeared in major venues including Clarkesworld.
