S.F. Said is a British children’s author born in Beirut in 1967. He grew up in London and studied at the University of Cambridge before working as a press attache for the Crown Prince of Jordan’s office. He later moved into film journalism at The Daily Telegraph before turning to children’s fiction full-time. All of his novels are illustrated by Dave McKean.
Said’s debut novel Varjak Paw (2003) follows a Mesopotamian Blue kitten who must leave the safety of his home and survive on dangerous city streets. The book won the Nestle Smarties Book Prize, and its sequel The Outlaw Varjak Paw took the Blue Peter Book of the Year award. His other works include Phoenix (2013), a space opera for older children, and Tyger (2022), set in an alternate London where the British Empire never fell. Tyger won Children’s Fiction Book of the Year at the 2023 British Book Awards.
