Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams partnered to create the Tunnels series, which became one of the more popular YA adventure series of the late 2000s. The project started as The Highfield Mole, a self-published novel that Gordon wrote and Williams illustrated. When the book found a wider audience, the authors expanded the concept into a six-book series that follows a teenager who discovers a vast civilization hidden beneath London.
The Tunnels books blend adventure, science fiction, and thriller elements as the story moves deeper underground with each installment. The series grew in scope from a story about exploration into something much larger, with stakes that eventually extend far beyond the tunnels themselves. After completing the Tunnels saga, Gordon published Summerhouse Land in 2017, a standalone novel that marked a departure from the underground world that made his name.
