Robin Oliveira grew up in Albany, New York, studied Russian at the University of Montana and at the Pushkin House Institute in Moscow, then became a registered nurse in Seattle. She specialized in critical care and bone marrow transplant before leaving nursing to raise her children. When her youngest started kindergarten, she turned to writing and earned an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts.
Her debut, My Name Is Mary Sutter (2010), follows a young Albany midwife who fights to become a surgeon during the Civil War. It won the Michael Shaara Prize for Civil War Fiction and reached the New York Times bestseller list. Oliveira returned to the character in Winter Sisters (2018), set in 1879 Albany. Between the two Mary Sutter novels, she published I Always Loved You (2014), a standalone about the relationship between Mary Cassatt and Edgar Degas in Impressionist-era Paris. Her most recent novel, A Wild and Heavenly Place (2024), is set in nineteenth-century Glasgow and Seattle.
