Richard Yates was an American novelist and short story writer whose work explored loneliness, failed ambitions, and the disappointments of mid-century American life. Revolutionary Road (1961), his debut novel about a suburban couple struggling against conformity, received renewed attention when it was adapted into a 2008 film.
His short story collections Eleven Kinds of Loneliness (1962) and Liars in Love (1981) are considered among the finest American short fiction. Other novels include The Easter Parade (1976), A Good School (1978), and Young Hearts Crying (1984). Though commercially underappreciated during his lifetime, Yates has since been recognized as one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century.
