Richard and Frances Lockridge were one of the most productive husband-wife writing teams in mystery fiction. They’re best remembered for the Mr. and Mrs. North series, which ran from 1940 to 1963 and followed Pam and Jerry North, a married couple who kept stumbling into murder investigations in New York City. The series inspired a Broadway play, a movie, a radio show, and a TV series. Pam North’s offbeat logic and conversational leaps became a signature of the books.

Beyond the Norths, the Lockridges wrote the Captain Heimrich series, a police procedural set in rural Putnam County, New York, which ran for 23 novels. They also created the Paul Lane and Bernard Simmons series and the Lieutenant Nathan Shapiro books. After Frances died in 1963, Richard continued writing on his own, keeping several of their series going into the late 1970s. Their combined output of nearly 150 books made them one of the most prolific partnerships in the genre.
