Resmaa Menakem is a therapist, trauma specialist, and author based in Minneapolis. His most widely read book, My Grandmother’s Hands (2017), examines how racial trauma affects the body and how it gets passed between generations. The book draws on somatic experiencing and bodywork practices, offering practical exercises alongside its analysis of race in America.
Menakem has published five non-fiction books between 2015 and 2022. His later works, Our Grandchildren’s Souls and The Quaking of America (both 2022), continue the themes of My Grandmother’s Hands, looking at cultural trauma and its effects on American society. Before writing, Menakem worked as a therapist for both civilian and military populations.
