Reginald Hill (1936-2012) was a British crime fiction writer whose career spanned more than four decades. Born in Hartlepool, County Durham, he studied English at St Catherine’s College, Oxford, and later worked as a teacher before turning to writing full-time. His first novel, A Clubbable Woman, appeared in 1970 and introduced the detective pairing that would define his career.
Hill is best remembered for the Dalziel and Pascoe series, which ran for 24 novels and followed the unlikely partnership of the loud, overbearing Superintendent Andy Dalziel and the university-educated, thoughtful Inspector Peter Pascoe. Set in the fictional Yorkshire city of Mid-Yorkshire, the books earned Hill the CWA Gold Dagger in 1990 for Bones and Silence. The series was adapted by the BBC into a popular television show that aired from 1996 to 2007.
Beyond Dalziel and Pascoe, Hill wrote the Joe Sixsmith mysteries about a Black amateur detective in Luton, the Captain Fantom historical adventure novels, and numerous standalone thrillers under his own name and pen names including Patrick Ruell and Dick Morland. He received the CWA Diamond Dagger in 1995 for his outstanding contribution to crime fiction.
