Rebecca Stead is an American children’s book author best known for her Newbery Medal-winning novel When You Reach Me, published in 2009. Born and raised in New York City, Stead originally pursued a career in law and worked as a public defender before turning to writing after the birth of her children. Her debut novel, First Light (2007), was a fantasy adventure, but it was her second book that brought her to national attention and won the highest honor in American children’s literature.
When You Reach Me is set on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in the late 1970s and blends mystery with science fiction, drawing clear inspiration from Madeleine L’Engle’s A Wrinkle in Time. Stead went on to win the Guardian Children’s Fiction Prize for Liar & Spy in 2013. Her later books, including Goodbye Stranger, The List of Things That Will Not Change, and The Lost Library, continue to explore the inner lives of young people with warmth and intelligence. She has also contributed short fiction to the Guys Read anthology series edited by Jon Scieszka.
