Raymond Benson is an American author and James Bond scholar who became the first American to write official Bond continuation novels. Before writing fiction, he published The James Bond Bedside Companion (1984), a reference guide that earned him recognition among Bond fans and eventually led to his appointment as the official Bond novelist by the Ian Fleming estate. He held that role from 1997 to 2002, producing six original novels and three film novelizations.

Outside of Bond, Benson has written extensively in the tie-in fiction space. He penned the first several Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell novels under the pseudonym David Michaels, starting in 2004, and also wrote books in the Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon and Tom Clancy’s EndWar series. His video game novelization work extends to the Metal Gear Solid and Hitman franchises. He has also written for the H.A.W.X., Homefront, and Dying Light game properties.

His original fiction includes the Black Stiletto series, a five-book run about a masked female vigilante operating in 1950s and 1960s New York, told through the device of discovered diaries. He has also published standalone thrillers, mysteries, and horror novels, along with non-fiction including a book about the band Jethro Tull. As a working dramatist and musician, Benson has directed theater productions in the Chicago area for decades.
