Rasheed Newson was born and raised in Indianapolis and is a graduate of Georgetown University. Before publishing his first novel, he built a career in television as a writer and producer, working on shows including Bel-Air, which he co-developed and executive produced. His background in television gives his prose a strong sense of scene and dialogue.
His debut novel, My Government Means to Kill Me, came out in 2022 and was named one of the New York Times 100 Notable Books of that year. It was also a Lambda Literary finalist for Gay Fiction. The book follows a young Black man named Trey who arrives in 1980s New York City and becomes involved in the AIDS activism movement. His second novel, There’s Only One Sin in Hollywood, is scheduled for 2026.
