Raquel Vasquez Gilliland is a Mexican American poet, novelist, and painter whose fiction blends magical realism with romance and family drama. Her work draws on Latin American folklore, botanical magic, and the complicated bonds between sisters. She published two poetry collections in 2018 before moving into novels with Sia Martinez and the Moonlit Beginning of Everything (2020), a YA sci-fi story about a girl whose deported mother returns under mysterious circumstances.
Her adult debut, Witch of Wild Things (2023), launched the Wild Things series set in the fictional town of Cranberry, Virginia, where the Flores sisters each have a different magical gift. The book mixes swoony romance with ghost stories and family curses, and became a USA Today bestseller. Lightning in Her Hands (2024) continues the series with a second sister’s story.
Gilliland’s YA novels, including How Moon Fuentez Fell in Love with the Universe (2021), explore identity, body image, and first love through a Mexican American lens. Across all her work, she brings a poet’s attention to language and a painter’s eye for color and landscape.
