Ramona Ausubel studied in the MFA program at UC Irvine and has published fiction in The New Yorker, The Paris Review Daily, Tin House, and other literary journals. Her debut novel, No One is Here Except All of Us, came out in 2012 to strong critical reception, winning the PEN Center USA Fiction Award and earning a New York Times Editor’s Choice designation.
Her fiction tends toward the surreal and the emotionally precise — she writes about extraordinary circumstances that illuminate ordinary human experience. The Last Animal (2023), her most recent novel, follows a scientist mother and her two teenage daughters on an expedition in Siberia to find woolly mammoth DNA, mixing scientific adventure with a story of family grief and resilience. Her short story collections A Guide to Being Born and Awayland show the same sensibility in shorter form.
