Rainbow Rowell grew up in Omaha, Nebraska, where many of her novels are set, and she spent years working as a journalist before publishing her first novel, Attachments, in 2011. Her breakout came with Eleanor & Park (2012), a love story set in 1980s Omaha that earned a Michael L. Printz Honor and introduced readers to her talent for writing teenagers who feel genuinely real. Fangirl followed in 2013 and cemented her reputation, drawing on her own experience with fan communities and the particular intensity of early adulthood.
From young adult fiction she moved into fantasy with the Simon Snow series, beginning with Carry On in 2015. Simon Snow had existed first as a fictional series-within-a-series inside Fangirl, so writing the actual novels was something of a recursive experiment that her readers loved. Alongside her prose work, she became the writer of Marvel’s Runaways in 2017, reviving the beloved team book, and later took on She-Hulk starting in 2022.
Her 2024 novel Slow Dance marked a return to adult contemporary romance, becoming a Reese’s Book Club pick and hitting number one on the New York Times bestseller list. Across all of it, her books share a consistent quality: characters who are funny and a little awkward, relationships built slowly out of small moments, and a real affection for the things people love obsessively, whether that’s comics, fan fiction, or a good mixtape.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many books has Rainbow Rowell written?
Rainbow Rowell has written 49 books across ten series.
What was Rainbow Rowell's first book?
Rainbow Rowell’s first book is Attachments, published in 2011.
Is Rainbow Rowell's Simon Snow series connected to Fangirl?
Yes. Simon Snow began as the fictional book series that the protagonist of Fangirl obsessively writes fan fiction about. After Fangirl’s success, Rowell wrote Carry On (2015) as an actual novel set in that world, followed by Wayward Son and Any Way the Wind Blows to complete the trilogy.
