R.J. McMillen was born in England, raised in Australia, and spent three years in Greece before settling in Canada in 1968 with her Irish-Canadian husband. The couple built their own sailboat and spent over 30 years exploring the waters of British Columbia’s west coast. That firsthand knowledge of the Pacific Northwest’s remote islands and waterways runs through every page of her fiction.
McMillen is a trained adult educator, freelance writer, and writing workshop instructor based in British Columbia and Jalisco, Mexico. She ran an art school producing hundreds of workshops in the literary and visual arts and founded No Coast Writers, a read-and-critique group. Her articles and essays have appeared in Pacific Yachting, Season Magazine, and Ojo de Lago, among other publications.
Her Dan Connor Mystery series draws on decades of coastal living to create an authentic setting where retired RCMP officer Dan Connor and his unlikely partner Walker, an indigenous man Connor once put behind bars, solve crimes among British Columbia’s islands. Each book in the series has been edited by a local indigenous editor for cultural accuracy.
