Qian Julie Wang is a Chinese American lawyer and author based in New York City. Her memoir Beautiful Country (2022) recounts her experiences growing up as an undocumented immigrant in Brooklyn during the 1990s, after her family left Shijiazhuang, China.
The book describes the daily realities of poverty and the constant fear of deportation, told from the perspective of a child trying to make sense of her family’s situation. Wang is also a graduate of Yale Law School and a practicing attorney, and the contrast between her childhood circumstances and her adult career gives the memoir an added dimension. Beautiful Country was a New York Times bestseller and has been widely adopted in book clubs and school reading programs.
