Philip Reeve is a British author and illustrator born in Brighton in 1966. He studied illustration at Brighton Polytechnic and Cambridgeshire College of Arts and Technology before working as a bookseller and illustrator. His debut novel, Mortal Engines, published in 2001, introduced readers to a post-apocalyptic world where cities move on wheels and prey on each other.

The Mortal Engines quartet earned Reeve the Carnegie Medal in 2008 for the final book, A Darkling Plain. He expanded this universe with the Fever Crumb prequel trilogy, set centuries before the main series. Beyond this world, Reeve has written the Victorian space adventure Larklight trilogy, the sci-fi Railhead series about sentient trains, and numerous illustrated books for younger readers with Sarah McIntyre.
