Phil Foglio has been creating comics and graphic novels since the mid-1980s, and he is best known for Girl Genius, the long-running gaslamp fantasy series he produces with his wife Kaja Foglio. Originally published as a comic book, Girl Genius moved to a webcomic format in 2005 and has won multiple Hugo Awards for Best Graphic Story. The series follows Agatha Heterodyne, a young woman who discovers she is a powerful “Spark” (a mad scientist, essentially) in a world where mad science has reshaped European civilization.

Before Girl Genius, Foglio created Buck Godot, a science fiction comic featuring a large, resourceful fixer on a space station, and What’s New with Phil and Dixie, a humor strip about gaming that ran in Dragon Magazine. He also illustrated the MythAdventures graphic novel adaptations of Robert Asprin’s novels. His art style is immediately recognizable: expressive, cartoony, and full of energy. The Girl Genius novels, written prose adaptations of the comic storyline, have extended the series’ reach to readers who prefer traditional books over comics.
