Mary Monica Pulver published the Peter and Kori Brichter series between 1987 and 1992. The five-book run combines police procedural plotting with cozy mystery warmth, centered on detective Peter Brichter and horse breeder Kori Price.
The series opens with Murder at the War, set at a medieval reenactment society gathering where a real murder disrupts the weekend festivities. Pulver drew on her own experience with the SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) for the setting, and the book earned an Anthony Award nomination for Best First Novel. From there, the stories shift to the couple’s life around Tretower Ranch in Illinois, mixing equestrian settings with whodunit plots.
Pulver went on to greater commercial success under two other pen names: Monica Ferris for the Needlecraft Mysteries (a USA Today bestselling series) and Margaret Frazer (with co-author Gail Frazer) for the Sister Frevisse medieval mystery novels. Before her fiction career, she served as a Navy journalist from 1962 to 1968.
