Peter Benchley (1940-2006) was an American novelist and screenwriter who grew up around the ocean. His father, Nathaniel Benchley, and grandfather, Robert Benchley, were both writers. After graduating from Harvard and working as a speechwriter for President Lyndon B. Johnson, Benchley turned to fiction. His first novel, Jaws, became one of the bestselling books of the 1970s and launched a massive film franchise.
After Jaws, Benchley continued writing ocean-themed thrillers including The Deep and Beast. Later in life, he became a prominent ocean conservationist and wrote several non-fiction books about marine life. He co-wrote the screenplay for the Jaws film and contributed to the adaptation of The Deep as well.
