Pauline Gedge was born in Auckland, New Zealand, and later moved to England before settling in Canada. She has sold over six million copies worldwide in nearly twenty languages. Her writing career began after she abandoned attempts at contemporary mainstream fiction in the early 1970s and turned to ancient Egypt for inspiration. That decision produced Child of the Morning in 1977, a novel about the female pharaoh Hatshepsut that won the Alberta Search-for-a-New Novelist Competition and has remained in print ever since.
Most of Gedge’s work draws on Egyptian history, and she is known for thorough research and strong female characters. Her three Egyptian trilogies each cover a different period: the Lady of the Reeds duology follows a peasant girl who becomes a concubine of Ramesses III, the Lords of the Two Lands trilogy tells the story of the Seventeenth Dynasty princes who fought to free Egypt from foreign rule, and The King’s Man trilogy traces the life of Huy Son of Hapu from childhood through his rise as an advisor to the pharaoh.
Beyond ancient Egypt, Gedge has written The Eagle and the Raven (set in Roman Britain), the science fiction novel Stargate, and two works with horror elements: Scroll of Saqqara and The Covenant. Across all her books, she brings historical settings to life with detailed research and characters that feel immediate and real.
