Paul Watkins was born in 1964, educated at Eton and Yale, and teaches at The Peddie School in New Jersey. He writes literary fiction under his own name and historical mysteries as Sam Eastland. The Telegraph once called him “the writer of his generation.”
His debut, Night Over Day Over Night, was written when he was 16 and nominated for the Booker Prize. Calm at Sunset, Calm at Dawn won the 1990 Encore Award. His other novels cover WWII, the Irish troubles, Alpine climbing, and more. As Sam Eastland, he writes the Inspector Pekkala series about a Finnish detective working under Stalin, which has its own page on this site.
