Paul Mann was born in Morpeth, Northumberland and grew up in the nearby mining town of Bedlington during the 1950s. He started in journalism at age sixteen as an office boy at The Evening Chronicle in Newcastle. His career as a reporter and magazine writer took him to London, Montreal, New York, Vancouver, Toronto, and Sydney, where he became a founding writer of Australian Geographic.
Mann published his first novel, The Libyan Contract, in 1988. The Colin Lynch spy thrillers came in quick succession after that, four books in five years, each following a British agent through Cold War-era espionage plots set in Libya, Beirut, and beyond. He then shifted to crime fiction with the George Sansi series, about a half-English, half-Indian detective working cases in Mumbai. Season of the Monsoon earned a spot on the New York Times Notable Books list. Later in his career, Mann wrote the Splatter Trilogy, a set of dark, violent crime novels about a mob hit man named Johnny Mondo, and several standalone novels including The Leek Club, a gritty and funny book rooted in his Northumberland upbringing. He now lives in Maine.
