Paul Fraser Collard is a British author who writes historical military fiction set in the Victorian period. He grew up reading Commando comics and Bernard Cornwell novels, and that love of military history runs through his work.
His Jack Lark series began with The Scarlet Thief (2013), introducing a common soldier who impersonates a dead officer and fights in the Crimean War. Over thirteen novels and three novellas, Jack Lark moves through the major battlefields of the nineteenth century, from India and Persia to the American South and South Africa. The books are known for their detailed, brutal battle sequences and for a protagonist who survives by grit, luck, and a willingness to reinvent himself.
