Paul Christopher’s ten novels all belong to the Paul Christopher Universe, a sequence of espionage and political fiction that spans more than three decades. The series launched with The Miernik Dossier in 1973 and continued with The Tears of Autumn (1974), both of which are set in the world of Cold War intelligence. The books follow interconnected characters through shifting political landscapes, from The Secret Lovers (1977) and The Better Angels (1979) through to Old Boys (2004) and Christopher’s Ghosts (2007).
Not every entry is a straight spy novel. The Bride of the Wilderness (1988) is a historical departure, and Shelley’s Heart (1995) deals with a contested presidential election. That willingness to move around within a shared fictional world gives the series a scope that most espionage fiction doesn’t attempt. Readers who pick up the first book should be prepared for a long, rewarding run through ten novels that reward reading in order.
