Patricia Moyes was a British mystery novelist who worked as a secretary to Peter Ustinov and as an assistant editor on several classic films before turning to fiction. Her first novel, Dead Men Don’t Ski, appeared in 1959 and introduced Inspector Henry Tibbett of Scotland Yard, a character she would return to for the next 34 years across 19 books.
The Tibbett novels are classic British mysteries in the tradition of Agatha Christie, with tidy plots, well-drawn settings, and a detective whose unassuming manner often causes suspects to underestimate him. Moyes set her stories in a variety of locations, from Swiss ski resorts to Caribbean islands to Dutch canal boats, drawing on her own travels for authentic detail. Her writing earned her an Edgar Award nomination and a loyal readership on both sides of the Atlantic.
Beyond the Tibbett series, Moyes contributed stories to several mystery anthologies and published a short story collection. She lived in the British Virgin Islands for many years before her death in 2000.
