Oscar Hokeah is an American author of Kiowa and Cherokee descent who works as a social worker in Oklahoma. His debut novel, Calling for a Blanket Dance (2022), was published by Algonquin Books and received substantial critical attention for its portrait of a Native American family across multiple generations.
The novel follows Everett Many Horses from infancy to adulthood, with each chapter narrated by a different family member – grandparents, parents, cousins, aunts and uncles – who each have their own stake in Everett’s survival and success. The structure allows Hokeah to show the web of relationships and obligations within a Native family without centering a single perspective. The title refers to a traditional dance ceremony.
Calling for a Blanket Dance was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award for Debut Novel and received recognition from multiple best-of-year lists. Hokeah’s professional background in social work with Native communities informs the book’s grounded depiction of poverty, addiction, and family resilience.
