Odd Thomas is the title character and narrator of Dean Koontz’s popular supernatural thriller series. First introduced in the 2003 novel that bears his name, Odd is a twenty-year-old short-order cook living in the fictional California desert town of Pico Mundo. He has the ability to see the lingering dead, and he also sees “bodachs,” shadowy creatures that gather wherever violence is about to happen. Rather than run from these visions, Odd feels obligated to act on them.
The main novel series spans nine entries, from Odd Thomas (2003) through Saint Odd (2015), with Odd Interlude and You Are Destined To Be Together Forever falling in between. The series follows Odd as he leaves Pico Mundo and moves through different settings, from a monastery (Brother Odd) to a billionaire’s estate (Odd Apocalypse). Throughout, the books balance genuine suspense with Odd’s dry, self-deprecating narration and his complicated relationship with the girl he loves.
The character also appeared in three graphic novels, beginning with In Odd We Trust in 2008, which were illustrated by Queenie Chan. A feature film adaptation starring Anton Yelchin was released in 2013. Across all formats, the appeal of the series comes down to Odd himself: a humble, reluctant hero who wants a quiet life but keeps getting pulled into situations where only he can help.
