NoViolet Bulawayo’s fiction draws on the experience of growing up in Zimbabwe and living in the United States. Her debut novel, We Need New Names (2013), follows a young girl who emigrates from Zimbabwe to America, and it earned wide attention when it was published. Her second novel, Glory (2022), arrived nearly a decade later and uses animal characters to tell a political story.
Bulawayo also contributed to the anthology African Roar 2011. With just three books out so far, her catalog is small, but the gap between We Need New Names and Glory suggests she takes her time with each project. Readers looking for literary fiction rooted in African experience have two strong novels to choose from here.
