N.K. Jemisin is an American speculative fiction author who made history by winning the Hugo Award for Best Novel three years in a row for her Broken Earth trilogy. She is one of the most celebrated fantasy and science fiction writers working today.
Born Nora Keita Jemisin in 1972 in Iowa City, Iowa, she grew up in New York City and Mobile, Alabama. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology from Tulane University and a master’s in education from the University of Maryland. Before writing full-time, she worked as a counseling psychologist.
Her debut novel, The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms (2010), was nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards and won the Locus Award for Best First Novel. The Inheritance Trilogy established her reputation for inventive world-building and complex characters.
The Broken Earth trilogy cemented her place in the genre. The Fifth Season, The Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky each won the Hugo for Best Novel, making Jemisin the only author to achieve this feat. Her work often explores themes of oppression, power, and resistance. She currently lives in Brooklyn, New York.
