Nico Walker’s debut novel Cherry, published in 2018, drew directly from his own life. The story follows an unnamed narrator through Army service in Iraq, the onset of PTSD and opioid addiction after returning home, and a descent into bank robbery. Walker wrote the book while serving an eleven-year federal prison sentence for robbing banks in Cleveland.
Cherry received wide attention for its raw, unfiltered prose and was adapted into a 2021 film directed by the Russo Brothers and starring Tom Holland.
