Nancy Thayer has been publishing women’s fiction since 1980, with her career split into two distinct periods. Her early novels, from Stepping (1980) through Custody (2001), are set in various locations and deal with marriage, family, and women’s lives in realistic, domestic settings. Spirit Lost (1988) is an outlier, a ghost story set on Nantucket.
Since Moon Shell Beach (2008), Thayer has written almost exclusively about Nantucket, publishing one novel each summer set on the island. These later books follow women navigating family relationships, summer romances, and the particular rhythms of island life. The Hot Flash Club series (2003-2006) is her only named series, a four-book comedy about four women who become friends at a spa retreat. Thayer has published 38 books in total across a career spanning more than four decades.
