Nancy Farmer is an American author who has earned major recognition for her children’s and young adult novels. She lived in Africa for seventeen years, an experience that shaped several of her books, including “A Girl Named Disaster” (1996), set in Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Her most acclaimed work is “The House of the Scorpion” (2002), a science fiction novel about a boy who discovers he is a clone of a powerful drug lord, which won the National Book Award for Young People’s Literature and a Newbery Honor.

Farmer followed “The House of the Scorpion” with its sequel “The Lord of Opium” (2013) and wrote the Sea of Trolls trilogy, a fantasy adventure set in the age of Vikings. “The Ear, the Eye, and the Arm” (1994), set in future Zimbabwe, also earned a Newbery Honor. Her books are notable for their carefully researched settings and their willingness to tackle difficult subjects through the lens of genre fiction. She has also written picture books and contributed to several young adult fantasy anthologies.
