Mortada Gzar is an Iraqi novelist, filmmaker, journalist, and visual artist. He was born in Kuwait, raised in Basra, and earned a degree in petroleum engineering from the University of Baghdad before turning to writing and art. He participated in the Iowa International Writers’ Workshop.

Gzar’s memoir, “I’m in Seattle, Where Are You?”, was longlisted for the PEN Translation Prize. Translated by William Hutchins and illustrated by the author, it tells the story of his journey from Iraq to the United States. He has also published novels, a children’s book, and a short story collection.
