Miss Marple is one of Agatha Christie’s two most famous detectives, alongside Hercule Poirot. An elderly spinster living in the fictional English village of St. Mary Mead, Miss Marple solves crimes through her sharp observation of human nature and her belief that village life provides parallels to any kind of wickedness. Her first full novel appearance was The Murder at the Vicarage in 1930, and Christie continued writing Miss Marple stories until Sleeping Murder, published posthumously in 1976.
The Miss Marple books are among the best examples of the cozy mystery genre. The mysteries rely on puzzle-solving rather than violence, and Miss Marple’s method of comparing suspects to people she has known in St. Mary Mead gives the series its distinctive flavor. The books have been adapted many times for television and film, with Joan Hickson, Geraldine McEwan, and Julia McKenzie among the actresses who have played the role.
