Min Jin Lee is a Korean-American author who writes about identity, class, and the immigrant experience. Her debut novel, Free Food for Millionaires (2007), follows a Korean-American woman navigating life in New York after college. It received strong reviews for its detailed portrayal of both Korean immigrant culture and Wall Street society, and it was a bestseller on several lists.
Her second novel, Pachinko (2017), is a multigenerational saga about a Korean family living in Japan. The book covers nearly a century of history, starting in the early 1900s, and deals with discrimination, survival, and belonging. It was a finalist for the National Book Award and became one of the most talked-about novels of the decade. Apple TV+ adapted it into a series in 2022. Lee’s upcoming novel, American Hagwon, is expected in 2026.
Lee has also contributed to the Disorder Collection, a series of short literary works published in 2019. Her fiction is known for its patient storytelling and attention to the economic pressures that shape people’s choices.
