Michael Francis Foley was born on June 7, 1965, and grew up in East Setauket on Long Island, New York. He became one of the most popular professional wrestlers of the late 1990s, performing under the names Cactus Jack, Mankind, and Dude Love in promotions including WCW, ECW, and WWE. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013.

Foley surprised the publishing world when Have a Nice Day! (1999) became a number one New York Times bestseller. He wrote the entire book in longhand, reportedly after his typewriter broke. He followed it with four more memoirs, two literary novels (Tietam Brown and Scooter), and several children’s books illustrated by Jill Thompson and others. His writing ranges from dark coming-of-age fiction to rhyming holiday picture books featuring WWE characters to a coloring comic book retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. He also wrote the WWE Superstars comic book series, which reimagined wrestlers in alternate-universe crime noir and fantasy settings.
